Reno News & Review

Week of Feb. 2, 2022

From the editor’s desk

This week we welcome back Bob Grimm, the RN&R’s movie review guru, as a regular feature on our pages. Bob supplies some binge-worthy recommendations for streaming movies and TV shows to make the pandemic a bit more palatable.

In downtown Reno, the battered Space Whale, born at Burning Man, is getting a makeover in Reno City Plaza. Scores of damaged glass panels are being replaced and the electronics are getting an upgrade after the city bought the celebrated cetacean for $62,500 and earmarked  $75,000 for repairs.

Kayakers, rafters and others want the ruins of the Ambrose Dam removed from the Truckee River. Proponents of the removal must first navigate bureaucratic obstacles and counter objections from folks who for generations have been using the pool behind the derelict dam as a swimming hole.

In food news, the FiftyFifty Brewing Company will anchor the restaurant hall at the still-under-construction Reno Public Market. In this week’s Taste of the Town, Johnathan Wright explores Champagne deals and romantic Valentine’s Day dining options in the Truckee Meadows.

And food also is a big part of Chinese New Year celebrations in Northern Nevada, as revelers ring in the Year of the Tiger. May your new year be safe and prosperous!

Take care,

—Frank X. Mullen, Editor
