The Food Bank of Northern Nevada invites folks to support its programs during Hunger Action Month in September. This outreach ranges from social media posts to virtual and real-time food drives (including collecting 10,000 cans of tuna), from restaurant donations to volunteer recruitment and more.

Artist Talks at Reno Fine Arts Collective Gallery

Reno Fine Arts Collective Gallery, 200 S. Virginia St., suite 100, presents its Artist Talks series on Fridays. Each talk begins 4:30 p.m. with complementary beverages, followed by speaker presentations beginning 5:30 p.m.

Artists in September are Stephanie Hogen on Sept. 10 (“Me and the Nude”), Zoe Bray on Sept. 17 (“Explorations in Traditional Portraiture), and Anela deLaveaga on Sept. 24 (“Sustainability in Woodworking and Design”).

Art on the spot benefits independent journalism

Artist Tamami Tokutake is participating in the Quick Draw portion of the Reno News & Review Sept. 23 fundraiser to support independent journalism. Here, one of her pastels, “Autumn Storm.”

From 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Sept. 23, the Reno News & Review is presenting its RN&R Art Talks Benefit, a fundraiser for the Independent Journalism Fund. The IJF helps fund independent local journalism in Northern Nevada and California, journalism that is not beholden to hedge funds or faceless corporate overlords thousands of miles away.

The Quick Draw portion of the event features prominent local artists creating works of art in 90 minutes. The Boneyard is a silent auction of works donated by artists and supporters. Guests at the benefit can watch the Quick Draw artists as they work and bid in the silent auction while they enjoy beverages and appetizers.

The event takes place at the home of local businessman and philanthropist Jim House, 175 Juniper Hill Road in West Reno. Suggested ticket donation: $50. Visit here for details/tickets.

TMCC presents food and drink classes in October

Truckee Meadows Community College is presenting food and drink classes in October through its Educational Programs Inspiring the Community (EPIC). Visit the EPIC site for class registration/locations/details.

•            Savory Curry runs 6 to 9 p.m. Oct. 19 and features hands-on cooking of golden Thai curry. Cost: $59. Register by Oct. 12.

•            Be Your Own Barista runs 9 a.m. to noon Oct. 23 and features practice of brewing techniques using different equipment. Cost: $59 plus $10 materials fee. Register by Oct. 16.

•            Vietnamese Soups runs 6 to 8 p.m. Oct. 25 and Nov. 1 and features hands-on cooking of classic Vietnamese soups. Cost: $89 plus $40 materials fee. Register by Oct. 18.

•            Knife Skills runs 6 to 8 p.m. Oct. 26 and features food preparation techniques using different knives. Cost: $85. Register by Oct. 19.

Beer meets chili meets music at Grand Sierra festival

The Beer & Chili Festival returns to Grand Sierra Resort and Casino, 2500 E. Second St., from noon to 6 p.m. Oct. 16. The event takes place at the property’s pool and features more than two dozen craft beers, chili cookers, voting for a favorite chili in the people’s choice contest and live music.
