We had to evacuate during the Bug Fire, the big one. We live in Northwest Reno, and I was alerted by the Watch Duty app. I had only 30 minutes to get home, get my stuff and evacuate. I took my documents, birth certificate, car stuff and my laptop—also, some books to read. I stayed at a friend’s house in downtown Reno. I stayed for three days until it was all clear to go back home.

My wife had a suitcase full of wedding photos, family photos and our passports. We live in the southwest area and (were) not real close to the fire, but my wife was ready to evacuate; she followed the fire’s path on social media. She’s from Switzerland, and this is all very intense for her. She had our jackets, candy and all our paperwork ready. You never know what will happen with a fire, especially with the wind here in Reno.

I was in Europe on a motorcycle trip during the fires, so I was checking in with my wife back home in Mogul. I called my son to go over and retrieve my watches and my sentimental items. My wife had packed up our paperwork and photos. I was holding my breath in Europe. There was nothing I could do—I was helpless. But I had faith in our firefighters.

I’ve had to evacuate before. I was living in South Lake Tahoe during the Caldor Fire. I was doing the water trucks for the Dixie Fire up in Susanville and had to go back to Tahoe to get my stuff. I grabbed a file box of photos, my grandfather’s bolo tie and sentimental family knickknacks like my dad’s crystal lion. I also had to help evacuate my girlfriend with her cat and photos, too.

I live off of Mae Anne (Avenue), and during the Hawk Fire, I was alerted through my Watch Duty app that it was time to evacuate. I saw the smoke and flames from my house. I grabbed my dogs, their food, bowls, collars and treats. I took my documents, like my diplomas, my Social Security card and my passport. I had to pack my sister’s stuff, too, as she was working at Renown. So, I grabbed her scrubs and off-duty clothes and my jammies, and went to stay at a friend’s home in east Sparks.
