Reno News & Review

Week of Nov. 14, 2024

From the editor’s desk

Donald Trump has been announcing cabinet picks this week—among them South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem for Department of Homeland Security secretary; Rep. Matt Gaetz for attorney general; and Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy for the as-yet unofficial Department of Government Efficiency.

There’s some uncertainty about whether they’ll all end up as cabinet members. Former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy told Bloomberg he predicts that the Senate will not confirm Gaetz, and Gaetz—the subject of a House investigation into allegations of sexual misconduct and illicit drug use—resigned from the House last night.

No matter who ends up serving in Trump’s cabinet come January, the new administration is eager to launch sweeping policy changes in immigration, health care, environment, education and other areas, which will affect countless aspects of American life.

This week and next, I’m talking with our region’s activists about what policy changes they’re anticipating, how these changes are likely to affect Nevadans, and how local groups are preparing for said changes. If you or anyone you know would like to weigh in on this conversation, please drop me a line by Tuesday, Nov. 19. You can find me at krisv@renonr.com.

Or, if you’re one of many people who felt the election like a gut punch, and you are inclined to take a breather from politics right now, I’d like to hear from you, too. Have you found a way to escape or regroup that you recommend to your fellow community members? I’ve been taking my moments of refuge in good TV (well, if you want to call the first two seasons of The Diplomat a departure from politics), soaking at Carson Hot Springs and, now that the sun’s setting before 5 p.m., sneaking out for afternoon walks with my dog to catch the finale of this fall’s impressive leaf show.

Whether you’re tuning into politics this week or tuning out, I’m looking forward to hearing from you and sharing a sampling of your thoughts with RN&R readers.

Take care,

—Kris Vagner, managing editor

Q: You have one question to ask one musician. What’s the question, and who are you asking?
A: I’d ask Dave Grohl or Caleb Shomo (of Beartooth) how they tour five nights a week and scream their faces off whilst singing perfect clean vocals.

We need your support!

There’s an old journalism phrase, about “comforting the afflicted, and afflicting the comfortable.” These days, that phrase has significant meaning for us, especially the “comforting the afflicted” part. For 31 years, the RN&R has told Reno’s stories, and has sought to uplift underserved communities. Please, if you have the means, help us to continue doing so, now that the government is showing renewed hostility toward so many. Thanks, as always, for reading.
