Heavy hitters

Heavy music trailblazers Napalm Death (pictured) and Melvins bring their Savage Imperial Death March II tour to Reno this Friday. Napalm Death’s 1987 debut album Scum, with its fast tempos, aggressive vocals and sociopolitical lyrics, influenced the trajectory of extreme music. Considered the fathers of grindcore, the British band has released 16 studio albums, including From Enslavement to Obliteration (1988), Fear, Emptiness, Despair (1994), Apex Predator—Easy Meat (2015) and Throes of Joy in the Jaws of Defeatism (2020). An equally influential band, Melvins has been credited with merging punk rock and heavy metal, forming a new sub-genre all their own. The prolific group has released more than 30 original albums, numerous live records and countless singles and rarities over their 42-year history. Recent releases include Tarantula Heart (2024) and Thunderball (2025), as well as the Napalm Death-Melvins collaboration Savage Imperial Death March (2025). (Read our interview with Melvins’ frontman Buzz Osborne here.) Hard Ons and Dark Sky Burial will open the 21-and-over show, which starts at 7:30 p.m., Friday, June 6, at Virginia Street Brewhouse, 211 N. Virginia St. Tickets are $41.23.
