Art anew

January can seem a bit plain, austere and well, boring, after all the glittery excess of December (and some of us January babies think thatโ€™s so unfair). But the first month of the year can also be a time to start new projects, set personal goals or refocus your energies. The start of the year can indeed be the sparkโ€”a glimmer of something exciting on the horizon. On that note, Artists Co-op Gallery of Reno will introduce five up-and-coming artists in its second annual Emerging Artists exhibit. The show and sale will feature works by Aria Moresi, Jana Chapin Dierker, Jenny Kane, Kathleen Hoppe and Sofia Lombardo. The exhibit opens on Thursday, Jan. 2, and runs daily through Friday, Jan. 31. There will be an artist reception from noon to 4 p.m., Sunday, Jan. 5. The Artist Co-op Gallery, 627 Mill St., is open from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily. Call 775-322-8896. or visit artistsco-opgalleryreno.com.

Fleischmann Planetarium kicks off its initial First Friday event of 2025 with a program about the origins of sound and music. Listen to alphorn music and a presentation by planetarium director Paul McFarlane, who will discuss a โ€œBrief History of Sound,โ€ which will touch on topics such as the Big Bang, the oldest known musical instruments, todayโ€™s radio telescope-mapping of the universe, and gravitational waves. Then watch Cosmic Originsโ€”an exploration of how the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph, the final instrument NASA installed on the Hubble Space Telescope, is deepening our understanding of distant objects and the origins of the universe. During your visit, check out the planetariumโ€™s collection of sci-fi pop-culture memorabilia, including a full-size replica of the TARDIS from the TV show Doctor Who, and explore SPACE! in the Exhibit Hall. The program begins at 6 p.m., Friday, Jan. 3, at the Fleischmann Planetarium and Science Center, 1664 N. Virginia St., located at the north end of the University of Nevada, Reno campus. Call 775-784-4812, or go to www.unr.edu/planetarium.
