Emily Hernandez Medina was valedictorian of the 2019 North Valleys High School class but was not allowed to give her commencement speech. She gave it on Oct. 19 at the 74th Annual Freedom Fund awards banquet hosted by the Reno-Sparks NAACP. This is how it ended: “I was told I couldn’t be valedictorian. I was criticized for being an art dork. I was disparaged constantly for being a first-generation Latina. Being valedictorian means nothing, but what I’ve done as an individual shines through. I’m more than a 5.3 GPA. I’m more than nine AP classes. I’m more than the number only recognizes me for—and so are you, class of 2019.”

On Thursday, Oct. 10, Bibo Coffee Company shut the doors to its 945 Record St. location for the final time. As part of the community farewell that accompanied the news, customers were encouraged to sign the now blank walls that were often used to display local art shows. Since opening in 2010, the Record Street Bibo has been a familiar gathering spot for University of Nevada, Reno, students and faculty, local artists, Reno firefighters and Union Pacific Railroad engineers alike. The building and surrounding residences will be demolished to make room for expanded UNR student housing projects.

Bean and gone

The Virginia Street road construction project continues. Last week, according to the project website, crews paved the lower section of Virginia Street from Plumb Lane to Mt. Rose Street. Sidewalks, paving, median island construction, striping, signs, landscaping and aesthetics are underway. Side streets have been paved in the area, and crews are installing signs, striping and sidewalks this week.

During his first campaign stop in Northern Nevada on Saturday, Sept. 28, Pete Buttigieg’s rally at Sparks High School was interrupted by a power outage during a question-and-answer segment toward the end of his speech. Projecting loudly to the crowd, some of whom used their cell phones’ flashlights to illuminate the stage, Buttigieg said, “Well, this is how they did politics back in the old days.”

Carolyn Olsen-Landis spoke about Dennis Myers at his memorial service on Sunday, Sept. 15, at the McKinley Arts & Culture Center. Approximately 200 friends, relatives and community members attended to pay their final respects to Myers, a career reporter and news editor at the Reno News & Review for nearly two decades.

Classes resumed for the fall semester at the University of Nevada, Reno on Monday, Aug. 26. As part of the school’s Welcome Week events schedule, the Associated Students of the University of Nevada (ASUN) gathered several local food trucks, vendors and campus and community groups for the Taste of Reno & Service Palooza on the lawn of the Mathewson IGT Knowledge Center. The event was meant to both feed students and inspire them to become civically engaged during their college careers.

At the military recruiting offices on Moana Lane, Marine recruits did calisthenics in the parking lot. An office spokesperson said this is done after recruits have signed up but before they’ve actually joined the service.

Getting ready

July was dry for the region, but rain and thunderstorms rolled through the Truckee Meadows late last week. The thunderstorms were the cause of several fires in the region. Thankfully, the rain cleared up on the afternoon of July 26 in time for the RN&R’s final concert in our annual Rollin’ on the River series, and produced a rainbow in Plumas Park .

After a recent crash, and while cars whizzed past them, Nevada Transportation Department workers arrived on the spaghetti bowl’s 80-east-to-395-south ramp and replaced guardrails and a guardrail attenuator (“crash cushion”) that were damaged. State highway information officer Meg Ragonese said about 40 feet of guardrail was replaced, which included ten guardrail posts, three panels of guardrail railing, and the attenuator.

Careful, now

The first floor of Deco, a 10-floor apartment building being plopped on top of the downtown Sparks municipal parking garage on C Street, is nearly in place. The $40 million project began in May 2018 and is expected to take two years to complete.

Going up

Two explosions in a University of Nevada, Reno dorm, Argenta Hall, last week attracted wide news coverage, in part because the number initially suggested a malicious attack. The cause was later announced as equipment problems. Eight people suffered minor injuries. Argenta and adjoining Nye Hall were scrutinized to learn if any structural damage was done. Both buildings will be rebuilt to deal with problems detected during the scrutiny. In addition, Argenta’s dining hall served six dorms so officials are casting about for housing and dining solutions for the autumn semester. The campus is asking Gov. Steve Sisolak for a declaration of emergency to qualify for federal funding. Classes start Aug. 26.
