In the middle of Reno, Virginia Lake is a winter home to dozens of species of water fowl. The Audubon Society reports that over 100 species have been recorded there, with notable ones including “Hooded and Common Mergansers, Snow and Ross’s Geese, and occasional Barrow’s Goldeneye and Eurasian Wigeon.”

One of the University of Nevada, Reno’s newest dorms has begun to take shape on Virginia Street, next to the Little Waldorf Saloon. The new structure is the brainchild of New York-based developer Park7 Group, and will be called “Park Place Reno.” Early planning by the group states that the new dorm will house over 700 students.

Native American Jingle Dress Dancers from the Reno-Sparks Indian Colony performed again this year during the Reno Women’s March. The dancers of all ages gathered together on the stage at the Reno Events Center to perform a healing dance.

The week of Christmas is forecast to bring both heavy snows and subfreezing temperatures to the valley floor. For the city’s homeless population, solutions like the warming tent at the Volunteers of America Shelter, 315 Record St., may be their only option for finding a warm bed at Christmas. The warming tent was opened in November to accommodate overflow from the main shelter and will be open until March of 2020. The tent can hold 60 occupants, and is manned by volunteer personnel every night. However, the VOA still struggles with capacity issues even now.

A little after noon on Monday, emergency services responded to a fire at an abandoned house at 447 Nevada St. Seen here from behind, the fire burned in close proximity to several businesses on Fifth Street. According to the Reno Gazette Journal, the home was declared a total loss. No injuries were reported, and the cause of the fire is still under investigation.

A golden eagle winged through the Virginia Range north of Carson City on Nov. 11. Golden eagles are among the largest, fastest raptors in North America. Their wingspans tend to range from five-feet-11-inches to more than seven feet.

On the Monday before Thanksgiving, city workers were seen hanging Christmas lights on the large evergreen pine in downtown City Plaza—opposite Reno City Hall—that serves as the town’s official Christmas tree at the annual tree lighting ceremony, which traditionally takes place in the first week of December. The “Believe” sign, which shares the plaza with both the tree and the Space Whale sculpture, was also observed sporting a giant Santa hat on the “B” in anticipation of the Christmas season—which now apparently preempts December altogether.

On Monday, Nov. 18, the recipient of the 2019 Laxalt Distinguished Writer Award, Jessica Bruder, right, spoke at length about her experience writing her 2017 book Nomadland, which chronicles the lives of Americans who live on the road, traveling to find work out of economic necessity. In a conversation with Donica Mensing, Associate Dean of the Reynolds School of Journalism at the University of Nevada, Reno, Bruder detailed her work going undercover at an Amazon warehouse in Fernley and working backbreaking hours at a sugar beet harvest amongst hundreds of retirement-aged Americans forced to live in campers and other converted vehicles to make a living. After the talk and a short Q&A segment, Bruder was presented with the official Laxalt Distinguished Writer Award by Monique Laxalt, daughter of Robert Laxalt, the Nevada author for whom the award is named.

Hundreds of people lined the sides of Virginia Street on Monday for the annual Veterans Day parade, wearing patriotic clothing, waving American flags and cheering in support of dozens of floats and other showings by active military personnel and various veteran’s organizations. The parade began at 11:11 a.m., in commemoration of the end of World War I, when the ceasefire took effect in the “11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month,” according to the armistice signed by Germany and allied forces in 1918. However, the war was officially ended by the signing of the Treaty of Versailles on June 28, 1919, making this year the official centennial celebration of the end of the War To End All Wars.

Over the weekend, a series of misprinted street signs gave a fresh identity to Reno’s main thoroughfare. First reported on social media by the owner of Craft Wine and Beer, a photo showed a street sign denoting the intersection of Martin and South “Virgina” Street. The Reno Gazette Journal confirmed that the misspelling was the fault of the City of Reno’s print shop and happened at two other intersections on St. Lawrence Street and Cheney Street. The signs served as the butt of internet jokes and hashtags like #virginaisforlovers, and even spawned merchandise like hoodies bearing Virgina St. signs. The misprints were quickly taken down, but the typo has been made other places, like this sign at the corner of South Virginia and Pueblo Street.
