Subtle yet spirited, staggeringly beautiful, this album places compositions by the mystic G.I. Gurdjieff around a new work by Tsabropoulos. The compositions are intended to alter or heighten consciousness. The music evokes Byzantium at a time when it was the crossroads of East and West, but neither Lechner nor Tsabropoulos are enrolled in any kind of occult-music fan club. Cellist Lechner and pianist Tsabropoulos make a timeless, polychromatic mosaic of music that is both classical and folk, Eastern and Western, improvised and notated. Gurdjieff once said, “I have a very good leather to sell those who wish to make shoes.” Lechner and Tsabropoulos have made an exquisite pair.
