Emma Doty was a 14-year-old high school student in Carson City when a gunman opened fire on the crowd attending the Route 91 Harvest music festival on the Las Vegas Strip on Oct. 1, 2017, killing 58 people and injuring more than 400 others.

Two years later, as an act of remembrance, she began placing labels with names and photos of the victims on candy bars and giving them away to schoolmates each year on Oct. 1. She continued the tradition as a student at the University of Nevada, Reno. Now that she has graduated, the Associated Students of the University of Nevada (ASUN) runs the project.

On Thursday, Oct. 1, Doty helped ASUN reps hand out candy outside of the Joe Crowley Student Union, one of 12 distribution spots on campus.
