What was University of Nevada, Reno, art professor Peter Goin doing on a step ladder in a boat? Making sure he had the right angle as he re-shot 19th-century photographs of the Lake Tahoe region, accounting for the fact that the lake level was three feet higher then. Frank Mullen talked with Goin about his new book of photographs, Lake Tahoe: A Rephotographic History.
Remember Alive, the 1993 movie about the Uruguayan rugby team members who survived a plane crash—and had to resort to cannibalism to survive? It was pretty good, Bob Grimm says—but Netflix’s new Society of the Snow, about the same real-life events, is even better, because it feels more authentic. Bob was less happy with Ferrari, a new biopic about the unlikable automaker and racer; not even the great Adam Driver could redeem the film.
There’s January food news aplenty! Learn about the second Annual Soup Week, the new Edelweiss Pizza Pub and Pastries in the old Noble Pie location at Summit mall, and Cookie Plug, the new hip hop cookie chain in Taste of the Town. And catch food scribe Maude Ballinger’s favorite winter meals—like the unusually crisp and satisfying portobello burger at Royce (think “chicken-fried mushroom”) in this month’s Best 3 Things.
Saxman Rick Metz’s favorite place in town to perform is Midtown Spirits Wine and Bites. You can catch him there every Sunday with the First Take trio, and you can learn more about what inspires him in The Lucky 13.
Sierra Arts, via local teachers Robin Heywood and Heather Gallagher Smith and their Uncharted Waters program, offers kids with developmental disabilities a chance to make some art projects—in an environment where no one tells them to stop having fun.
New in town? Wondering where the locals like to hit the slopes? Outdoor writer Maggie Nichols explains the many reasons why Mount Rose Ski Tahoe is the place.
Stay safe, and take care!
