Fallon band Silverwing released its second album, County Line, on Dec. 1.

The band is known for its mix of two-stepping country tunes and swamp rock inspired numbersโ€”and for a series of regular gigs at places like Boomers in its hometown, Mummers in Sparks and the Red Dog in Virginia City.

The new recordโ€”almost two years in the makingโ€”features the bandโ€™s genre-bending mix of blues and country-western but also carries an overall tone of nostalgia. It was inspired by the 2016 passing Merle Haggard, the musical hero of Silverwing founder Mel Warstler.

โ€œMel sat down and wrote a song probably within 24 hours of hearing heโ€™d passed,โ€ said his wife and band bassist and vocalist Mary Warstler. โ€œAnd that, of course, is included in this album. Itโ€™s called โ€™Angel Band.โ€™โ€

In it, guitarist and vocalist Mel sings the lines, โ€œThe working manโ€™s poet/ Thatโ€™s what they said about you/ Now the poetโ€™s in heaven/ and Iโ€™m left behind missing you.โ€

โ€œWe were kind of talking about recording, but we hadnโ€™t gotten started yet,โ€ Mel said. โ€œThen I wrote that song, and it kind of spurred a couple of others to be finished. The next thing you knew, we figured out we had an albumโ€™s worth of material.โ€

The album is comprised mainly of originals but includes a few Haggard covers, including โ€œMomma Triedโ€ and โ€œSilver Wings,โ€ the song for which the Warstlersโ€™ band was named.

โ€œYeah, we did โ€™Silver Wings,โ€™ which a lot of our longtime fans had wanted us to put it on the last CD,โ€ Mel said. โ€œWe didnโ€™t, and some of them were disappointed. We figured this was the perfect opportunity to address that.โ€

The bandmates also took the opportunity with County Line to explore nostalgia through the completion and inclusion of several songs theyโ€™d been working on together and individually for years.

Keyboardist Georgina Arze contributed a song sheโ€™d been working on called โ€œIn My Dreams.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s kind of an uptempo, bluesy, rocker thing,โ€ Mel said. โ€œThatโ€™s Georginaโ€™s style. Sheโ€™s all about the blues-rock stuffโ€”but if you pay attention, you can feel some of that โ€™90s-style country.โ€

Maryโ€™s contribution to the album includes the songs โ€œThe Price He has to Payโ€ a song about maintaining self-worth through a breakup, and an upbeat number called โ€œRich and Famous.โ€

โ€œโ€™Rich and Famousโ€™โ€”itโ€™s about raising kids, but itโ€™s the rockingest song about being a mom ever written,โ€ Mary said.

She wrote the song back when she and Mel were still raising five boysโ€”two his, and three hers. The album also includes a track Mel wrote many years ago for Mary.

โ€œItโ€™s called โ€™Iโ€™ll Give You Everything,โ€™โ€ Mel said. โ€œItโ€™s kind of a story about how Mary and I metโ€”and itโ€™s a love song. Itโ€™s a slower paced ballad.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s like a big-hair ballad,โ€ Mary added.

โ€œYeah, itโ€™s almost Journey-like in a way,โ€ Mel said.

The new album is available on iTunes, Amazon, CD Baby and streaming services like Spotify. In the coming months, the band will play shows around Sparks, Fallon and Virginia City to promote itโ€”and the Warstlers are confident that its nostalgic feel will resonate with their fans.

โ€œThe thing about going back and listening to those songs is that they obviously had staying power,โ€ Mary said. โ€œThey had meaning when they were written, and years later we relook at them and still consider them relevant and good and meaningful.โ€
