From the editor’s desk
The RN&R just had its 30 birthday! To celebrate, we published some great stories and memories from original founders, past editors and current staffers. The community weighed in, too, with their impressions of some of the important work that the late Dennis Myers and Bruce Van Dyke did during their tenures here. One of the running themes in these stories was “I got a job with the RN&R, and it changed my life”—mine included.
In David Robert’s Streetalk, Renoites talked about which special anniversaries they celebrate, and in the publisher’s note, Jimmy Boegle talked about the cold, hard fact that the news industry has changed so drastically that advertising alone is no longer cutting it as a revenue source for the RN&R. Here’s why the long-term solution is community based.
Frank Mullen, editor at large, offers an update on 375 missing computers at Truckee Meadows Community College, including machines that lacked any tracking data at all. While memos noted that “many” of the missing computers were due to be replaced anyhow, an RN&R cross check revealed that some of these machines were just a couple of years old.
As a Susanville, Calif., man alleged to have sexually abused several minors awaits trial, people close to the case have explained why they suspect that he has many Reno victims as well.
This holiday season, if you’re looking for an opportunity for charitable giving that won’t break your bank, there are hundreds of ways to help the people in our community. Here are three with which to start.
Reporter Zoe Dixon went to the Taylor Party at the Virginia Street Brewhouse and talked to some locals about how and why they are Swifties for life. In other music coverage, Matt King asked local drummer Jonathan “Jonny” Louis our Lucky 13 slate of questions.
If you’ve had more sappy sweetness than you can swallow from the standard entertainment on offer this time of year, Brüka Theatre’s got you. Christmas With the Crawfords is a dark, campy, musical romp.
Movie guy Bob Grimm gave Godzilla Minus One a major thumbs up. It’s “a real movie, with real heart and real scares.” It’s not just the best Godzilla movie—it’s one of the best monster movies ever.
Stargazer Robert Victor previews this month’s skies—including the annual Geminid meteor shower.
Take care,
—Kris Vagner, managing editor
