Reno News & Review

Week of Feb. 14, 2024

From the editor’s desk

Happy Valentine’s Day! If hearts and flowers are what you’re after, I’ll refer you elsewhere. This year, the RN&R is talking about falling out of loveHere’s a primer on how the divorce industry helped make Reno what it is today, and where to go if you’re seeking to untie the knot.

We’ve got a few rainy days ahead, so pull up a couch. True Detective: Night Country—HBO’s compelling murder-mystery currently starring Jodie Foster and Kali Reis—is in its fourth season and just keeps getting better. Here’s the full review from Bob Grimm. Meanwhile, The Book of Clarence, streaming on a few different platforms, would have been better if it had committed fully to either being a comedy or a serious take on biblical themes.

In local author Suzanne Morgan Williams’ new YA novel, Sierra Blue, a 14-year-old horse lover can see animal auras, which gives her a superpower when it comes to solving certain problems. You can meet Suzanne at a book signing this Saturday, Feb. 17, from 1 to 4 p.m. at Barnes and Noble in Reno, and you can read Chapter 1 in our Western Lit column

Each month, RN&R food scribe Maude Balinger talks about three standout restaurant dishes. In February, she shines a spotlight on the fettuccine carbonara at The Kitchen Table—“perfectly al dente ribbons of house-made fettuccine noodles tossed in a glossy sauce, with pieces of tender, salty pancetta that shine in every bite”—and two more irresistible meals she’s had of late.

This weekend, Feb. 17 and 18, the Lake Tahoe Winter Reggae Festival will take place at the brand-new Tahoe Blue Event Center featuring eight reggae acts. Damian “Jr. Gong” and Stephen “Ragga” Marley are among the headliners.

Mark your music calendar for next weekend, too. On Saturday, Feb. 24, the Holland Project presents Larrypalooza!, a benefit show to support beloved Reno outdoor aficionado and music supporter Larry McKurtis as he recovers from a serious medical incident

Take care,

—Kris Vagner, managing editor
