Bruce Van Dyke—beloved disk jockey at The X in Reno, and Jive Radio on the Internet and a long-time columnist for the Reno News & Review—died Sept. 16. Publisher Jimmy Boegle pays tribute to BVD and his storied career. We also republished Bruce’s first Neon Babylon column from 1994, before this newspaper evolved into the RN&R. For decades, Bruce conducted the sound tracks of his listeners’ lives—and delivered insights and laughs in print. We’ll miss you, BVD.
Theater critic Jessica Santina reviews Artifice, at the Restless Artists Theatre through Oct. 3. Jessica reports that the rapid-fire farce is a wild and silly ride.
With COVID-19 fears subsiding, local performing-arts companies are finally back to planning full seasons, with several of them bringing back season tickets. Check out Jessica’s fall/winter performing arts preview for theater, dance and other offerings on stage in the coming months.
Moving on to streaming TV, Bob Grimm was unimpressed with Andor, Disney’s latest Star Wars series. His verdict after four episodes: “pretty bad, with half-baked characters, confusing flashbacks and no real sense of where the story is going.”
As an author who wrote about the Donner Party, I was particularly interested in our reviewer’s take on Dahmer-Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story. Bob says the Netflix series is a well-done, realistic portrayal of Dahmer, a killer whose cannibalism was born out of mental illness. It’s a far darker tale than that of the snowbound pioneers in the Sierra, who resorted to eating the dead because it was the only way to survive.

All of these pieces can be read now at RenoNR.com; these stories—and a whole lot more—can be found in our October print edition, hitting streets starting Friday.
I’ll see you in the funny papers,
—Frank X. Mullen, Editor

A realistic portrayal: Netflix’s ‘Dahmer-Monster’ is well-done—but you won’t want to watch it twice
By Bob Grimm
September 26, 2022
Netflix’s Dahmer miniseries is a rough 10-episode experience—a messed-up but realistic depiction of one of history’s most messed-up people.

Not ‘fresh’ to me: Four episodes into Disney+’s ‘Andor,’ I’m not impressed
By Bob Grimm

Four episodes in, Andor is just a bland soap opera with slow pacing that is borderline frustrating.

Our fifth print edition back hits the streets over the weekend. We continue adding columns and content. Our archives going back to 2000 are online. All of this is being made available for free to all. However, printing, distribution, transportation, writers, editors, web serving—all of this costs a LOT.
