Trekker Maggie Nichols gives readers a tour of the Prison Hill Recreation Area in Carson City, which spans 2,500 acres and is crisscrossed by trails popular with hikers, mountain bikers and equestrians. The hike offers excellent views of the Carson Range and the Pine Nut Mountains, and panoramic views of Nevada’s capital.
In this month’s 15 Minutes, photo chief Dave Robert profiles Krysta Palmer, a Carson City native and an Olympian diver who won a bronze medal in Tokyo in 2021. Palmer, who began training in gymnastics when she was 8 years old, won the first Olympic individual medal for a U.S. female diver since Laura Wilkinson won gold in Sydney in 2000. And in Dave Robert’s Streettalk column, he asks people to confess their music “guilty pleasures.” Their answers range from Nerdcore to the Thompson Twins.
Bob Grimm, meanwhile, recommends Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie; the actor participates in an open, sometimes brutal and very funny look at his career, and how he’s dealing with Parkinson’s disease. “The disease is taking a toll on him physically,” Grimm writes, “but he’s lost little of his spark for life—and his sense of humor shines through.” Our movie reviewer also gives high marks to Guy Ritchie’s The Covenant, which he says is “a solid rescue thriller based on real events—and it gives Jake Gyllenhaal an opportunity to shine.”
Grimm also previewed The Muppets Mayhem, yet another Disney reboot of the Muppet franchise. While he enjoyed the iconic puppets, the humans in the flick “cause portions to drag or fall flat.” Still, he writes, the movie is “just fine for those looking for a Muppets fix after a bit of a drought.”
The Nevada Poetry Project is in bloom, with submissions from more than 100 budding bards. A live audience will get a taste of those poems on June 10 at the Oaks Park Art Center in Fallon, when a cadre of readers will offer a theater performance of verse selected from the project.
If you haven’t yet done so, be sure to pick up our May print issue, now on newsstands across Northern Nevada.
I’ll see you in the funny papers.
Take care,
