Reno News & Review

Week of March 2, 2022

From the editor’s desk

As we mark the second-year anniversary of the relentless COVID-19 crisis, we take a look at Northern Nevada residents who reached out for help—and the caring people who answered those calls. The Reno-Sparks Mutual Aid group, for example, has 6,600 members and counting—and a host of “little miracles” to its credit. Our sidebar profiles other grassroots service efforts where people can get help or volunteer to lend a hand.

Johnathan Wright reports that the new Rounds Bakery in Sparks opened weeks earlier than planned, a boon to local bagel lovers. In this week’s Taste of the Town, St. Patrick’s Day libations and unlimited March Mania munchies are on the menu.

Movie maven Bob Grimm gives his highest rating to Hollywood’s latest stab at the classic unrequited love story of “Cyrano.” In that incarnation, Peter Dinklage plays the brash title character who is skilled with a sword, but whose infamous Pinocchio nose is replaced by the actor’s short stature.

In his debut astronomy column, Robert Victor describes the dance of the planets forecast in the heavens this month, and explains when to catch up with the celestial wanderers. Keep watching the skies!

But stay safe out there,

The RN&R is making a comeback in 2022. We’ve launched a new, state-of-the-art website; we’re bringing back familiar writers—and adding new ones. We may even be back in print (fingers crossed). However, we’re still running in the red—and we need reader support to stop the losses. Please click the button below to help the RN&R out, if you have the means. Thanks for reading!
