From the editor’s desk
Toward the end of each month, we send the RN&R to the printer in Las Vegas on a Tuesday. It’s shipped to Reno, and we begin distributing it on Friday.
So, there’s a three-day gap between when we hit send and when the paper starts hitting the stands. We plan and write our news with that three-day gap in mind. But sometimes we’ll discuss a topic as things are still unfolding.
The July issue’s news section will contain a timeline of the shutdown notices that Sierra Nevada Job Corps has received, along with the pauses to those shutdown notices. (You can also read it online.) As of yesterday, there’s another development to add to the timeline.
The Associated Press reported today:
A federal judge on Wednesday granted a preliminary injunction to stop the U.S. Department of Labor from shutting down Job Corps, a residential program for low-income youth, until a lawsuit against the move is resolved.
The AP also reported:
“Once Congress has passed legislation stating that a program like the Job Corps must exist, and set aside funding for that program, the DOL is not free to do as it pleases; it is required to enforce the law as intended by Congress,” (U.S. District Judge Andrew) Carter wrote in the ruling.
A rep from Sierra Nevada Job Corps Sierra sent an update by email yesterday, saying that the local campus in Stead will remain open for the time being ,and that any students who have left during the cycle of conflicting notices over the last several weeks are encouraged to return.
But there’s still another ruling pending. So, the headline on the piece we sent to press on Tuesday still summarizes the situation pretty well: “In limbo.”
In other news, it’s time to vote for your favorite local people, places and things in our annual Best of Northern Nevada contest! The poll is open until Sunday, July 20, and we’re excited to let you know in our September issue who all of the winners are.
Take care,
—Kris Vagner, managing editor

Horror with heart: Danny Boyle’s ‘28 Years Later’ delivers beauty, emotion and zombie thrills
By Bob Grimm
This movie is unusually beautiful and heartwarming for a zombie film. In fact, it’s probably the most beautiful, deepest zombie film ever made. But that’s not to say it doesn’t deliver with the zombie thrills—because it most certainly does.
