Reno News & Review

Week of Sept. 12, 2024

From the editor’s desk

Each year (except for a few years of pandemic madness and post-pandemic readjustments) the RN&R contracts a local artist to create the illustrations for the Best of Northern Nevada issue.

We pay the artist for the drawings, and after we publish them, the artist retains the copyrights and is free to do with them whatever they please. We encourage artists to ride any momentum they may get from having their work around town in 25,000 copies of the paper. Usually, that means they schedule an exhibition, a sale or a run of prints while the Best Of issue is still on the stands.

The first chance to get an in-person glimpse of Nathaniel Benjamin’s 2024 Best Of art—hilarious, macabre sendups of some of our favorite Reno icons—is coming up this weekend.

Nathaniel is having a pop-up show this Saturday evening only from 6 to 8 p.m. at Pitch Black Printing Co., 700 E. Fourth St., in Reno. He’ll be showing giclee prints of his Best Of illustrations, taking orders for a future print run, and selling a limited run of postcards with one of the images that made us chuckle the most—a beefy, pink hotrod being attacked by a giant turquoise scorpion under the Reno Arch.

Take care,

—Kris Vagner, managing editor
