Hi RN&R Readers,
The March print edition will be hot off the press this weekend and next week! Keep an eye out for it at your favorite local businesses. Meanwhile, I’ve got some book, film and music news for you right here.
In 1974, Nellie Shaw Harnar, a Northern Paiute woman who had a master’s degree in history and a long career as a schoolteacher, published a book titled Indians of Coo-Yu-Ee Pah (Pyramid Lake): The History of Pyramid Lake Indians in Nevada. In 2023, her son, Curtis Harnar, along with Billie Jean Guerrero from the Pyramid Lake Museum and Visitors Center in Nixon, got the book back into print. You can pick up a copy at the museum.
RN&R‘s film and TV writer Bob Grimm has two strong dis-recommendations this week. Drive-Away Dolls, Ethan Coen’s first narrative film without his brother, Joel, now in theaters, is “a rushed, sloppy story that offers a few laughs. … The film offers hints of the brilliance and comedic edge that have propelled the Coen brothers’ movies through the decades, but the overall experience is grating.“
And Anyone but You, starring the likable Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell in a riff on Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing, is so blunt and predictable that Bob’s already dreading the sequel.
In the summer of 2019, Virginia City poet Shaun Griffin went for a long bike trek in the Oregon and Idaho wilderness with his sons, who, by then, had been out of the house and living their own lives for 10 years. Having time to disconnect from the world and reconnect with his family was precious. Griffin’s memoir about the experience, River Ask Me Why: Into the West on Two Wheels, will be available after March 15.
Teree Yount, aka DJ TigerBunny, has been performing locally for 24 years. Her eclectic live show features a few staples, like a vinyl-only set from her massive collection, and an emphasis on unconventional gems you won’t find in other modern DJ sets. She talked with music scribe Matt King about what inspires her in the Lucky 13 Q+A.
Take care,
—Kris Vagner, managing editor

Sloppy comedy: Ethan Coen botches ‘Drive-Away Dolls,’ his first narrative film without his brother
By Bob Grimm

Drive-Away Dolls is a rushed story that offers a few laughs, but ultimately shows that Ethan Coen might need a couple more solo efforts under his belt before hitting his stride.

We sent our March print edition to press earlier this week. It’s printed in Las Vegas—because there are no more commercial printers in Northern Nevada—and those 25,000 copies will be trucked all the way to our warehouse in Sparks. Late this week, over the weekend and early next week, our distribution drivers will pick up those papers and distribute them in 700 locations throughout Reno, Sparks, Carson City, Minden, Gardnerville, Truckee and all around Lake Tahoe. Of course, all of the writers, editors, photographers and graphic designers whose work is in the issue get paid. You know how much all of this costs? The short answer: a lot. Help us with these costs, if you can, by clicking the button below and becoming an RN&R supporter. After all, we have not raised our prices—above free—like, ever. Thanks, as always, for reading!
