Mural, mural on the wall
Local, national and international artists will create murals in public spaces around Carson City as part of the Brewery Arts Center’s second annual Carson City Murals & Music Festival. Attendees will have a chance to meet the artists as they create their murals over the three-day festival, which begins on Thursday, Sept. 26, and runs through Saturday, Sept. 28. Erik Burke, Bryce Chisholm and Edwin Martinez Esco from Reno; Gregg Deal from the Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe; Charly Malpass from Truckee; Jabi Corte and Leire Urbletz from Spain; and Priscilla Aldana G. (PRISM) from Mexico are some of the artists who will add 19 new murals to the 23 murals that were created during the inaugural festival in 2023. There will be artist lectures, mural tours, children’s art activities and live music throughout the weekend, including a free performance by Mike Clark & The Sugar Sounds starting at 5 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 28, at the outdoor stage at the Brewery Arts Center, 449 W. Film buffs and filmmakers will come together this week for the seventh annual Cordillera International Film Festival. Listed as one of “The 25 Coolest Film Festivals in the World” by MovieMaker Magazine, the event offers screenings of more than 150 films, red carpet premieres, celebrity panels, parties, staged readings of finalists’ screenplays, filmmaker Q&A sessions and more, starting on Thursday, Sept. 26, and running through Monday, Sept. 30. Events will be held at various locations in Reno and Sparks. Most screenings will be at Galaxy Luxury+ IMAX Theater Outlets at Legends, 1170 Scheels Drive, Sparks. Tickets start at $15. Enter the dragon
Dragon Lights Reno returns for another magical run at the Wilbur D. May Arboretum & Botanical Garden. Guests can experience an enchanting walk along paths illuminated by 40 sets of brand new, larger-than-life light displays set against the autumn foliage of the arboretum’s perennials, shrubs and trees. In celebration of the Year of the Dragon, the show’s centerpiece is a 100-foot-long dragon that flies over a cherry blossom forest. Another highlight is a winter wonderland section featuring Arctic animals like polar bears, puffins and narwhals. During your visit, you can let the kids run around in an interactive playground, browse through lantern souvenirs and Asian handicrafts in the marketplace, and warm up with a variety of food and drink options in the food court. The seasonal attraction opens on Friday, Sept. 27, and runs daily through Saturday, Nov. 30, at Wilbur D. May Arboretum and Botanical Garden inside Rancho San Rafael Regional Park, 1595 N. Glow show
Take the family out for a night of art, movement and fire at the final Reno Night Market of the season. J Resort’s Glow Plaza transforms into a creative space featuring local artists and muralists, Burning Man art cars, performances by the Biggest Little Circus, DJ sets and an after-dark fire show. The kids’ zone offers a bounce house, free arts and crafts, face painters and musical fun with local nonprofit School of Rock. More than 40 local creators and artisans will show their work at the pop-up vendors’ market, and an assortment of food trucks will have plenty of tasty fare for sale. The event takes place from 5 to 11 p.m., Friday, Sept. 27, at the J Resort Glow Plaza, 670 W. Fourth St. Admission is free, but a $5 donation is appreciated. Orchestral maneuvers
Reno Phil’s 56th Classix concert series takes off with Ludwig van Beethoven’s “Eroica” Symphony, a symphony in four movements that marked the start of the composer’s middle or “heroic” period when he composed many original works on a grand scale. Music director and conductor Laura Jackson leads the Reno Philharmonic Orchestra in this masterpiece, which redefined the symphonic art form. The program will also feature Reno Phil’s principal bassoonist Eric Fassbender, who will perform Carl Maria von Weber’s Concerto for Bassoon in F Major, op. 75, accompanied by the orchestra. The concert will open with Gabriela Ortiz’s orchestral composition “Kauyumari.” The title comes from a Huichol word that means “blue deer” and refers to a spiritual guide in Huichol folklore. Performances start at 7:30 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 28, and 4 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 29, at the Pioneer Center for the Performing Arts, 100 S. Praise the gourd
Pumpkin patches are popping up everywhere now that fall has arrived. This weekend, Ferrari Farms opens up its 27th Annual Fall Festival, offering more than 40 different varieties of pumpkins, squash and gourds for sale, as well as a five-acre corn maze, hayrides, barn dances, farm animals, country store and more. Admission is free. The fall attraction is open daily from Saturday, Sept. 28, through Sunday, Nov. 3, at 4701 Mill St. Call 775-997-3276, or go to www.ferrarifarms.org. Lattin Farms will open its pumpkin patch and corn maze starting on Friday, Sept. 27. The farm will also offer craft fairs, an evening corn maze and special events on selected dates. The fall festival is open on Friday and Saturday through Saturday, Nov. 2. Entry is $8 for the pumpkin patch and $9 for the corn maze. The farm is at 1955 McLean Road, Fallon. The farm has a pumpkin patch and corn maze during the week, with extra attractions such as miniature golf, pig races, hay wagon rides and food vendors on the weekends. Meet local artists and get to know your local art community at Scoop Fest. Double Scoop, Nevada’s independent visual arts publication, holds its annual community art festival and fundraiser offering a mini artists market featuring jewelry, ceramics and other works, hands-on demos from Black Rock Press and the Nevada Museum of Art, an exhibition and gallery talk by Las Vegas artist Brent Holmes, and 19 arts organizations presenting their events, opportunities and programs. There will also be lunch for sale by Silver State Pie Co. food truck, vinyl spun by DJ Will Houk and a raffle of original artwork donated by artists including Elaine Parks, Maria Partridge, Eleanor Preger and Catherine Schmid-Maybach. A lot of fun
United Cerebral Palsy of Nevada will hold its third annual Concert in the Parking Lot next weekend. Enjoy a variety of Halloween-themed activities, live music, a kids’ zone, carnival events, a live tortoise and hare race, raffle prizes, vendor booths, food trucks and a fashion show featuring clothing and other items in the UCP Thrift Store. This family-friendly event is open to people of all ages and abilities. Admission is a suggested donation of $5. Donations will benefit United Cerebral Palsy of Nevada, a nonprofit providing hands-on support for people with disabilities to learn vocational and life skills.
