The Nevada State Museum in Carson City will host its Dรญa de los Muertos celebration a week later than tradition dictates, this Friday and Saturday, Nov. 7-8.

The Nevada State Museum will hold its 19th annual Dรญa de los Muertos Celebration a week later than tradition dictates, but better late than never. The two-day celebration of the Mexican holiday that honors deceased loved ones kicks off at 5 p.m., Friday, Nov. 7, with hot chocolate, a display of ofrendas (vibrantly decorated memorial altars) and live music by Los Chavos de la Sierra. The Day of the Dead festivities continue with an all-day event featuring traditional music and dance performances, ofrendas, food trucks, face painting, sugar-skull decorating and other crafts from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 8. Kimmi Bitter and the Westside Twang.

If you like a little bit of country mixed with a little bit of rock โ€™nโ€™ roll and a dash of 1960s cool, then Kimmi Bitter and the Westside Twang may be just what your ears have been searching for. Bitter and her band blend classic country with surf rock, psychedelic twangs and a touch of mod flair. The Californian singerโ€™s retro-modern stylings have earned her multiple awards, chart success and growing acclaim. Kimmi Bitter and the Westside Twang will play three shows this weekend, starting with a performance at 7 p.m., Friday, Nov. 7, in the Vista Room at The Club at Arrowcreek, 2905 Arrowcreek Parkway. Itโ€™s turkey time

The closest most Americans ever get to a turkey is the one that ends up on the dinner table on Thanksgiving Day. But this weekend, the only gobbling going on will be the gurgling vocalizations of live turkeys during the 18th annual Meet the Turkeys event. The family-friendly fall celebration features farm animals from Valley Amigos Ranch, family photo opportunities with turkeys, a scavenger hunt, story time with a Washoe County park ranger, information on beekeeping and gardening in Nevada, craft activities in the Discovery Room, and a holiday craft fair run by the Childrenโ€™s Entrepreneur Market. Short Tail Coffee will have drinks and snacks available for purchase. The free festival is open from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 8, in the Nevada Farms and Families area at Rancho San Rafael Park, 1595 N. Nevada Museum of Art will hold its monthly Hands ON! Second Saturdays event this weekend. This monthโ€™s session, โ€œFall-ing for Art,โ€ offers interactive art activities, storytelling, a docent-guided tour of the galleries and performances by Little Swan Dancers. โ€œArt Expeditionsโ€ provides children the opportunity to engage with NMA staff and take a closer look at current work on view. The Reno Phil embarks on a musical expedition with its Classix concert titled โ€œJohn Williams and Sibelius.โ€ The program opens with Zhou Tianโ€™s symphonic work โ€œTranscend,โ€ which was commissioned by a consortium of 13 orchestras, including the Reno Phil, to mark the 150th anniversary of the completion of the Transcontinental Railroad. Percussionist Tennison Watts and saxophonist Timothy McAllister (pictured) will join the Reno Philharmonic Orchestra for a performance of John Williamsโ€™ jazzy โ€œEscapades.โ€ Then, the Reno Philharmonic Youth Orchestra will perform side by side with RPO for Jean Sibeliusโ€™ powerful โ€œFinlandia.โ€ The concert closes with the Finnish composerโ€™s majestic Symphony No. 2 op. 43 in D Major. Performances start at 7:30 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 8; and 4 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 9, at the Pioneer Center for the Performing Arts, 100 S. Virginia St. Tickets are $23.50-$122.50. As soon as the Halloween decorations come down, the holiday trees, wreaths and garlands go up. The Reno Wind Symphony will present its concert โ€œResounding Gratitudeโ€”Honoring Our Veteransโ€ in celebration of Veterans Day. Check in starts at 8 a.m., followed by a tribute to veterans at 8:45 a.m. The 5K race starts at 9 a.m., followed by the fun run at 9:15 a.m. Entry fees are $40 for the run and $20 for the walk, with a $10 discount for veterans, active-duty military and students for the 5K race. $5 from each paid participant will be donated to Nation’s Finest, with the remaining proceeds benefitting Carson High Safe Grad in support of the safe and sober celebration offered to graduating seniors. The University of Nevada, Renoโ€™s Performing Arts Series continues with the twangy guitar sounds of Twanguero, aka Diego Garcรญa. His music is a fusion of classical Spanish guitar, Latin rhythms, country, rockabilly, jazz and surf music. The Latin Grammy winner has performed and recorded with artists such as Andrรฉs Calamaro, Mercedes Sosa and Adriana Varela, among others. He has also participated in original soundtrack recordings for TV, radio and cinema, both in his native Spain and in the Americas. The show starts at 7:30 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 13, at the Hall Recital Hall in the University Foundation Arts Building, 1338 N. Virginia St., on the University of Nevada, Reno, campus.
