While the astronomical calendar says summer doesnโt start until the solstice on June 20, itโs already summer according to the Celtic calendar. The ancient Celts of Britain and Ireland marked the start of summer on Beltane, which was traditionally held on May 1, or about midway between the spring equinox and summer solstice. Celebrate the return of summer and immerse yourself in Celtic music and culture at the annual Northern Nevada Celtic Ceilidh next weekend. The ceilidh (pronounced kay-lee) features bagpipers, dancers, clans, vendors and food trucks, as well as headlining performances by Peter Daldry, Golden Bough and the Reeling Banshees. The free festival will be held from noon to 8 p.m., Saturday, May 17, inside of and in the shared parking lot of Black Rabbit Mead Co., Lead Dog Brewing and Nevada Sunset Winery, 401-415 E. Fourth St. Each of the venues join Sons and Daughters of Erin, Northern Nevada, in presenting and sponsoring the event. A portion of the proceeds will benefit SADOE, a nonprofit Irish heritage organization. SADOE is in need of volunteers to help out at the festival, so if you would like to volunteer, call 775-378-0931. Visit irishnevada.org for more information.
