Butterfly effect

Collateral & Co. presents Fragments of Existence, a multi-disciplinary dance work that examines the fragile and ephemeral nature of life through the presence and experience of the monarch butterfly. Featuring choreography by Collateral & Co. artistic director Caitlin Bell in collaboration with Collateral & Co. dance artists; poetry by Melanie Perish and Bell; and time-lapse sketching by scientist and artist Tiffany Pereira, Fragments of Existence is a call to awareness and action—a celebration of beauty, a meditation on mortality, and a call to protect what is at risk before it is too late. The performance starts at 7:30 p.m., Thursday, July 17, at the Nevada Museum of Art, 160 W. Liberty St. Tickets are $20 for general admission, $15 for NMA members and $10 for students. I’ll drink to that

Wanna walk with the animals, talk with the animals, grunt and squeak with the animals, and drink with the animals? Well, you probably won’t get to do anything with the animals, but you can enjoy a drink or two while viewing the bears, big cats, foxes and other resident animals at Animal Ark. The wildlife sanctuary will hold its annual Ales & Tails fundraiser offering craft drinks from 10 Torr Distilling and Brewing, Pigeon Head Brewery and other local beer and wine vendors. Food will be available for purchase from Mary’s Minis and Croffle Corner. The 21-and-over, outdoor party begins at 4:30 p.m., Saturday, July 19, at the Animal Ark, 1265 Deerlodge Road, located about 25 miles north of downtown Reno. Tickets are $22 for adults and $20 for seniors age 65 and older, and includes your first drink. Go to www.animalark.org/special-events for more information.

Get into the groove

Return to the decade when we wanted our MTV—you know, back when it used to be about the music. This weekend, you’ll get a chance to relive that totally awesome time starting with ’80s Night featuring high-energy tribute band New Wave Crave, who will play popular hits from Top 40 stars like Madonna to artists who were a little more left of the dial like The Cure. Dress up in your favorite look from the era, and play a game of pinball; strike a pose next to a DeLorean; and soak up the nostalgic vibes at this dance party, which begins at 7 p.m., Friday, July 18, at the Reno Public Market. The theme continues the following day with She-Rock, Ladies of the Eighties. The rock band’s five singers play the hits in the personas of Tina Turner, Cher, Pat Benatar, Joan Jett, Stevie Nicks and other iconic women who made their mark in the music industry. The group will turn back time starting at 8 p.m., Saturday, July 19, at the RPM, 299 E. Plumb Lane. Admission is free to both shows. Visit www.renopublicmarket.com or www.artown.org.

Rising from the ashes

Last September’s Davis Creek Fire not only burned down more than a dozen homes and buildings; it also severely damaged Davis Creek Regional Park. The still-closed park continues its slow rehabilitation, but the public will have a chance to help with the restoration efforts at a benefit titled Up! The Creek. The event will feature local dignitaries, firefighters, residents and representatives from environmental organizations and other groups who will talk about their connections to the park, as well as performances by musical artists including the Sierra Alphorn Players (pictured). Local visual artists will give a special showing of their work inspired by Davis Creek in conjunction with an art auction benefiting the park. Washoe County Park Ranger Nick Steuer will also give an update on the park’s recovery. The benefit show starts at noon, Saturday, July 19, at Reno Public Market, 299 E. Plumb Lane. Admission is free.
