Seeking thrills, chills and a killer cocktail? Orlando, Fla.-based entertainment company Midnight Creative invites hapless victims, er, curious imbibers to enter the Serial Killer Speakeasy, an immersive experience combining dark history, theatrical intrigue and themed cocktails. Mixologists and storytellers will plunge audience members deep into the minds and motives of notorious serial killers Ted Bundy, Jeffrey Dahmer, John Wayne Gacy and Ed Gein as they sip on cocktails with names that relate to each killer’s tale. The 90-minute theatrical production takes place at Good Luck Macbeth, 124 W. Taylor St., Reno. Tickets are $55-$80. Chart a course for the west shore of Lake Tahoe to see some of the world’s best-preserved and restored wooden boats at the Lake Tahoe Concours d’Elegance. Presented by the Tahoe Yacht Club Foundation and Tahoe Luxury Properties, the 52nd annual boat show is the centerpiece of a larger celebration of Lake Tahoe’s maritime tradition and its connection to vintage watercraft. This year’s event showcases the Riva marque class. The event is open from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Friday, Aug. 7; and 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 8, at Obexer’s Boat Company, 5300 W. Lake Blvd., Homewood. Tickets are $45 for a one-day pass and $65 for a two-day pass. Admission is free for kids age 12 and younger. Upgraded passes include access to the wine village, a guided tour of the exhibitor boats and a spot on the Olson Bridge for the Roar-Off and Concours finale on Saturday afternoon, among other perks. Brewing up some fun
Sample a variety of beers for sale from local and regional breweries at the 25th annual Brews, Jazz and Funk Fest. Alibi Ale Works, FiftyFifty Brewing Co., Tahoe National Brewing Company and Truckee Brewing Company, among others, will offer some of their best products for drinking-age adult attendees to taste while festival-goers of all ages can move and groove to music by Rambo Party, Elemental, Peter Joseph Burtt and the Kingtide, Jonny Wild, The Get Rich Quick, Tim Snider and Wolfgang Timber, Dúo Dinámico with special guests and Pressing Strings. Festival hours are noon to 7 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 8, at The Village at Palisades Tahoe, 1750 Village East Road, Olympic Valley. Tickets are $25 in advance and $35 on the day of the show. Indulge in a wee bit of Scottish tradition and local history at a community event celebrating the 200th birthday of Alison “Eilley” Oram Bowers, whose fortune helped build one of the area’s best known historic mansions. The Nevada Society of Scottish Clans and Washoe County Regional Parks and Open Spaces host this fête honoring the Scottish immigrant, Nevada pioneer and Comstock Lode-era millionaire, who, along with her husband, Lemuel Sanford “Sandy” Bowers, built Bowers Mansion in 1862. The Scottish cultural heritage group will hold its membership drive and annual potluck picnic featuring food, raffle prizes, games such as the haggis toss and performances by the Sierra Highlanders Pipe Band. The celebration will take place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 8, at Bowers Mansion Regional Park, 4005 Bowers Mansion Road, New Washoe City. A walk through history
Learn about the early settlement, historic buildings and cultural heritage of Tahoe City, which celebrates its 163rd anniversary this weekend. Karen Willcuts of Mountain Town Walking Tours will share stories about its people, landmarks and noteworthy events as she leads guided walking tours of the mountain community’s downtown area. The tours depart at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 8, from the Sierra Surf Club restaurant, 425 N. Lake Blvd., Tahoe City. After the walk, visitors can continue to explore nearby shops, restaurants and museums, including Watson Cabin and Gatekeeper’s Museum, 130 W. Lake Blvd., which houses the Marion Steinbach Native American Basket Collection and features exhibits on Lake Tahoe’s maritime history, resort heritage, art and pop culture. Museum admission is $9-$10, and free for military, students and kids age 12 and younger. The walking tours are free, but advance registration is encouraged as space is limited. Jazz Age jamboree
Soak up the sights and sounds of the Roaring ’20s at the Great Gatsby Festival. The 39th annual living history event features antique cars, 1920s-inspired drinks, tours of the Pope House, a craft and vintage vendor market, photo booth, lawn games and performances by the Tahoe Ukulele Club and the Jared Blum Band. The Prohibition era-themed bash takes place from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 8 and 9, at the Pope and Baldwin Estates, located at the Tallac Historic Site, 1 Heritage Way, South Lake Tahoe. The pangs of dark delight
Darkwave and industrial-edged electronic music acts Nuda and SINE will bring their Divine Creatures tour to Reno. Seattle-based Nuda creates an immersive experience in her live performances with atmospheric instrumental soundscapes, physical elements and light shows. SINE, led by Austin, Texas-based drummer, producer and vocalist Rona Rougeheart, blends industrial synth-pop with melodic rock influences. Rougeheart makes a return visit to the area a year after SINE and industrial music artist Curse Mackey performed at the Holland Project. Mackey will be joining this lineup with a “femme-forward” DJ set. The all-ages show starts at 7 p.m., Tuesday, Aug. 11, at the Holland Project, 140 Vesta St. Tickets are $15. History and fantasy come together at the Valhalla Renaissance Faire, which returns to the Tahoe area next weekend.
