A helping hand
It can feel a bit frivolous to think about fun things to do when so many people in our community have been personally affected by the Bug, Fred Mountain, Stallion and Hawk fires. In the coming weeks, there will be fundraisers, benefit shows and other events to raise money for residents whose lives have been turned upside down. In the meantime, you can do your part by donating money to the Food Bank of Northern Nevada, which is part of Washoe County’s coordinated emergency response effort. You can also drop off food donations from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, at AHA Connects Reno, 199 E. Moana Lane. Please donate only non-perishable, unopened food—and check expiration dates. Visit www.fbnn.org. Monetary donations can also be made to these organizations that are also involved in the emergency response: the American Red Cross of Northern Nevada Chapter (www.redcross.org/local/nevada) and the Salvation Army—Reno Corps (reno.salvationarmy.org).
Spoiled for choice
If you love going to concerts, you’ll have quite a dilemma this week figuring out which shows you want to see the most. J Resort wraps up its summer concert season with two events in its Festival Grounds venue, starting off with the Brighter Daze Music Festival, featuring two days of reggae, rock and hip hop acts, including Rebelution, Wiz Khalifa, Iration, SOJA, Common Kings and Yelawolf, among others, on Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 29 and 30. Motown legends The Temptations, featuring founding member Otis Williams, will grace the outdoor stage at 6 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 6. Grand Sierra Resort boasts a full week of top-name entertainment ranging from legendary singers to ’80s New Wave groups. Bluegrass superstars Alison Krauss and Union Station featuring Jerry Douglas will perform at 8 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 27. Tickets are $84.50-$139.20. Iconic singer Diana Ross performs her Motown classics and chart-topping solo hits at 8 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 2. Tickets are $124.60-$388.66. The Lost ’80s Live tour features an all-star lineup of new wave, pop and alternative artists, including Big Country, B-Movie, China Crisis, Dramarama, The Icicle Works, The Vapors and Oingo Boingo Former Members. Finally, enjoy A Great Night Out with singer Roger Daltrey, who will perform The Who classics, rare gems and solo favorites from his long career. Enjoy a night at the movies at several events going on around the area this week. The Carson City Classic Cinema Collective will present Truth, Justice, and the Blockbuster Way, the second installment of the Rise of the Summer Blockbusters film series. The program explores the evolution of the modern superhero film, and starts off with a showing of Superman: The Mad Scientist, the 1941 Fleischer Studios animated short that set a new standard for superhero animation. The event continues with a screening of Richard Donner’s 1978 landmark feature Superman: The Movie, starring Christopher Reeve as the Man of Steel. Summer days drifting away
Take a nostalgic trip to the golden days of rock ’n’ roll with live music, classic cars, contests and a drive-in movie screening at the National Automobile Museum’s inaugural Rock ’N’ Roll Night at the Drive-In. Guests are encouraged to bring their classic vehicles, dress in their favorite looks from the era, and dance away to music by Papa Clutch and the Shifters. Participants can enter several contests including Best Dressed Character Couple and Best Classic Car. Following the live entertainment, attendees can sing along to the tunes of the 1978 musical romantic comedy film Grease in the comfort of their vehicle as the movie plays on the screen. The retro event kicks off at 5:30 p.m., Friday, Aug. 28, at the West Wind El Rancho 4 Drive-In Theater, 555 El Rancho Drive, Sparks. Funktion Chicano Market celebrates its second anniversary with Cruisin’ Thru the Years. The event will feature lowriders and custom vehicles, vendors, food trucks and a double feature screening of two films that focus on Mexican-American characters and aspects of Chicano culture and history. Michael Pressman’s 1979 neo-noir film Boulevard Nights follows two Mexican-American brothers navigating life in East Los Angeles—one seeking a stable future, the other pulled deeper into street life. Luis Valdez’s 1981 feature Zoot Suit, starring James Edward Olmos, is a fictionalized version of the Sleepy Lagoon murder trial, in which a group of young Mexican Americans were charged with murder, resulting in the racially fueled Zoot Suit Riots in 1943. Gates open for guests arriving in lowriders and custom vehicles at 6 p.m., and the vendor area opens at 7 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 29, at West Wind El Rancho 4 Drive-In Theater, 555 El Rancho Drive, Sparks. Family ties
Washoe County FAM and Family Respite Care of Nevada hosts the third annual FAM Fest FAMily Movie Night, a community-focused event to raise awareness about the urgent need for more foster and adoptive families, while also celebrating and supporting the youth and families currently involved in our area’s foster care system. This evening under the stars will feature local vendors, free popcorn, food trucks, carnival games and activities for all ages and a showing of the animated film The Super Mario Galaxy Movie on a giant outdoor LED screen.
