UNR Department of Theatre and Dance presents โ€˜Hirโ€™

Presented by the University of Nevada, Reno, Department of Theatre and Dance, Hir is a family drama set in contemporary California.

Written by acclaimed playwright Taylor Mac, Hir blends dark comedy with intimate family tragedy. Mac describes the playโ€™s style as โ€œabsurd realism,โ€ combining heightened theatricality with deeply personal emotional stakes. Hir explores themes including gender fluidity and the expansion of identity categories, the collapse and reversal of patriarchal power, trauma and cycles of violence, and the tension between social revolution and personal responsibility.

โ€œIโ€™ve truly enjoyed diving deep with the actors to build the world of this play and craft the layered characterizations that bring this family to life. Itโ€™s filled with sharp humor, but it also explores themes that resonate in profound and meaningful ways,โ€ says director Sandra Brunell Neace.

Hir show times are 7:30 p.m., Fridays and Saturdays, April 10, 11, 17 and 18; and 1:30 p.m., Sundays, April 12 and 19, at the Redfield Studio Theatre, Church Fine Arts, at the University of Nevada, Reno.

The Crystal Method.

Earlier this week, the Artemis II crew on board the Orion capsule made history by traveling farther from the Earth than any previous spaceflight crew. This week also marks the 65th anniversary of the first human orbital spaceflight in history, when Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin flew the Vostok 1 spaceship and completed one orbit around the Earth on April 12, 1961. Coincidentally, the first orbital spaceflight of NASA’s Space Shuttle program launched on April 12, 1981โ€”20 years after Gagarinโ€™s historic flight. The 12th day of April is also Yuriโ€™s Night, an international celebration that aims to increase interest in space exploration through talks, dance parties or other events. Las Vegas electronic act The Crystal Method (pictured) will headline Renoโ€™s Yuriโ€™s Night celebration, with support from DJs Vic Crulich, D6, Bridges and Emerson, taking place a day early on Saturday, April 11, at Dead Ringer Analog Bar, 432 E. Fourth St. Doors to the 21-and-over event open at 9 p.m. Tickets are $30-$40. Goย www.freshbakin.comย or deadringernv.com.ย
