At the Nevada Legislature last week, domestic abuse agency directors Sue Meuschke, right, and Joni Kaiser along with Sen. Bernice Mathews, center, faced an Assembly committee to seek funding for shelter programs. Those programs are normally funded by a portion of the marriage license fee, but marriages have declined during the recession. Abuse, unfortunately, has seen no such decline.

They’re being used as a site for drills for firefighters who here are sending a cherry picker to the casino roof. The Bender family— Ron, Jody, and April— stopped by on a Sunday afternoon to watch.

Renoites jammed into the Hannah Humanitarian Awards dinner last week. The event, held by the Committee to Aid Abused Women, recognized Nevada Network Against Domestic Violence director Sue Meuschke, Washoe Sheriff Mike Haley and his deputies Kerry Saulnier and John Medina.

Fifty-five peace advocates gathered in downtown Reno on the sixth anniversary of the Iraq war to call for an end to that conflict and shifting to negotiations in the Afghanistan war.

Mourners lined up Sunday at the memorial service for community leader Phyllis Kaiser as Sparks United Methodist Church. Kaiser, daughter of a Las Vegas mayor and mother of the director of a Reno domestic abuse agency, was director of Vietnam refugee resettlement in Nevada and director of the Community Welfare Agency. As a peace activist, she traveled to places like Nicaragua and Vietnam. Once when U.S. Sen. Paul Laxalt of Nevada warned of a “danger” that the state, by opposing the MX missile system and nuclear waste storage, was risking becoming known as a “peacenik state,” Kaiser responded, “Sounds good to me.”

Michael Hillerby, left, and his father, Fred Hillerby, check their messages at a lobbyist bench at the Nevada Legislature. Fred began lobbying in Nevada 32 years ago. He was joined by son Mike in 1991. Mike then took a flyer in government, as director of the state Department of Museums, Library, and Arts and then chief of staff to Gov. Kenny Guinn. He then returned to lobbying. The Hillerbys are not the first father/son lobbying team, having been preceded by Wallie and Stan Warren and Clark and Joe Guild.
