Although U.S. Sen. Edward Kennedy lost the Nevada presidential primary election on May 27, 1980, he was still running strong the previous December when he spoke to a Democratic Party luncheon in what was then the MGM Grand Hotel in Reno. That luncheon followed a Senate hearing he conducted in the same hotel with Nevada’s Sen. Howard Cannon. Seated next to Kennedy at the luncheon was Reno Mayor Barbara Bennett. Kennedy’s family spent time at Lake Tahoe when he was growing up and he made several appearances in the state over the years, including a stop at the University of Nevada campus in Reno during the 1960 campaign and a visit to the Pyramid Lake tribal reservation as part of an inquiry into Native American issues.

Julia Minchenko, right, answered questions from a customer at the Sparks Methodist Farmers Market on Tuesday. Unlike some markets around the valley, there is no difficulty finding the produce at the Methodist market, because there are no taco stands, T-shirt booths, or beer stands to overwhelm the event. It is held from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. every Tuesday morning.

Congratulatory balloons surrounded Harry Day on his last day of work at the Washoe Voter Registrar’s Office. Day retired after 28 years. When he began work, the office was in the Washoe County Courthouse on South Virginia Street. It’s now in the county complex on Ninth Street. Judges, state legislators and mayors were among those attending a retirement party for Day, who has become a fixture in the voter registration and elections office.

Sparks city workers have been preparing the former Pacific Pawnbrokers building, left, for demolition. Asbestos removal has already been completed. The city government pressured Pacific to move out of the downtown and bought both this property and two nearby properties, one of which also had active businesses on it. The city is uncertain what it will do with the parcels.

“Grass will grow in the streets” is a traditional political warning—“a threat of financial ruin if the opposition is elected,” according to Safire’s Political Dictionary. Well, grass has started to grow between the cobblestones in front of the shuttered Silver Club casino in Sparks. The club closed in January, throwing 200 employees out of work.

The Heart o’ Town and Golden West motels across Virginia Street from Circus Circus have been closed off with chain-linked fences. On Center Street, the Chalet and another motel bearing no name have been given the same treatment. A sign on one of them calls the closure permanent.

Luca and Finnegan Kornze Bobzien, preemies who spent several post-birth weeks in the hospital, made a public appearance at a Progressive Leadership Alliance fundraiser last weekend. They are the children of UNR worker Lisa Kornze and state legislator David Bobzien.
