Scores of drop boxes for the Washoe County Toys for Tots campaign await new and unwrapped toys, books and gifts that Marines and volunteers will distribute to children throughout Northern Nevada this holiday season.
Last year, organizers said, Toys for Tots Reno “fulfilled the Holiday hopes and dreams of more than 10,000 children in Washoe County and surrounding areas.” Toy donations are accepted until Dec. 30.

This year marks 75th anniversary of the Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots drive, which began in 1947. To date, the effort has delivered 627 million toys, books and gifts to more than 281 million children, according to the organization’s website. The campaign spends 97% of monetary donations on programs, with 2.3% spent on fundraising efforts and reports spending 0.6 % on overhead costs.
The Washoe County Toys for Tots Campaign is the Truckee Meadows local branch of the Toys for Tots Foundation run by the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve and local Marine Corps League Detachments. The campaign, organizers said, offers local children “recognition, confidence and a positive memory for a lifetime.”
