Welcome to this weekโs Reno News & Review.
Because of familial obligations, I havenโt been getting out much latelyโand when I have, itโs mostly been to my usual haunts. In fact, I had to hand over my Man About Town credentials to RN&R Special Projects Editor Matt Bieker. So, it was nice recently to discover a new-ish restaurant that Iโm excited about: Plaza Maya Restaurant, 1644 S. Wells Avenue.
Youโve probably already been there. But, for the sake of this column, letโs hope you havenโt. Itโs exactly the sort of place I always wanted to find back in the halcyon days of Ye Olde Mid-2000s when I was writing restaurant reviews for this paper. Itโs centrally located but feels oddly secluded since itโs connected to the South Wells Avenue roundabout and hidden behind an affiliated imports store and a lounge that looked popping, although I was too laden with children to check it out.
Margot and I have been there twice now, and both times were excellent. The first time, a few weeks ago, we were there for lunch. Or breakfast. Or some combination of the two. If only there was a word that combined โlunchโ and โbreakfast.โ โฆ I vote for โleakfast.โ We were there at lunchtime but ordered breakfast foodโthe chilaquiles were delicious. And then, last Friday, we took the brood there for dinner.
Great atmosphere, friendly service, and amazing food. Street tacos that taste as good as the best of the real thing, and maybe the best chile relleno Iโve ever had. Everything tasted fresh and vibrant. And thereโs an inclusive community vibe that canโt be beat.
Anyway. It might be a new contender for โbest Mexican restaurant.โ Vote now in the RN&Rโs annual readersโ poll: bestofnorthernnevada.com. This is last week of round one!
