Welcome to this weekโ€™s Reno News & Review. As I sit writing this, the first official day of spring is just a day awayโ€”and I couldnโ€™t be more excited. I feel like this winter, especially the last half of it, has been brutal. We needed the snow, for sure, but the roads have been crappy and the skies have been gloomy for whatโ€™s seemed like weeks at a time.

I donโ€™t know about you, but I think everyone in the newsroom is itching to get out of town, or at least get out in the sunshine for a while. So, for this weekโ€™s feature story, we decided to run a photo essay about Bodie, California, using photos I took there last year. If youโ€™ve not heard of it, itโ€™s a ghost townโ€”one of the nationโ€™s best preservedโ€”just about 135 miles from Reno. Itโ€™s totally worth a visit, but, then again, Iโ€™d say that about just any ghost town. Visiting one is my idea of an ideal day trip.

If itโ€™s not yours, check out our Streetalk column. This week, Special Projects Editor Matt Bieker asked folks to tell him their favorite day trip spots. A few of the places they recommended were ones with which I wasnโ€™t familiar.

For now, Iโ€™m happy to hoof it around town when the weatherโ€™s good. Iโ€™ll get out to a ghost town or two once the snows have melted and the roads arenโ€™t mostly mud. Itโ€™s early in the year yet. In fact, a lot of placesโ€”Bodie includedโ€”arenโ€™t accessible right now. Theyโ€™re still snowed in. Iโ€™m just glad thatโ€™s not the case here in the valley.
