Volunteers kept track of Renoโ€™s dirty parts last week during Keep Truckee Meadows Beautifulโ€™s annual Litter Index. Results show that eight neighborhoods have more litter than last year, while 14 areas were cleaner, and three remained the same.

Volunteers scoured 25 different areas stretching from Cold Springs to Galena and from Sparks to Verdi looking for litter throughout neighborhoods, freeways and open spaces. They then ranked the area on a scale of 1-4, with 1 meaning โ€œvirtually no litter can be observedโ€ and 4 meaning โ€œmajor illegal dumpsites are present.โ€

The cleanest neighborhoods this year, each receiving a 1.1 rating, were listed as โ€œSoutheast CAB,โ€ โ€œWest University NAB,โ€ Downtown Reno, Spanish Springs and Cold Springs. Open spaces with the least litter, receiving a 1, were off Pyramid Way, Golden Valley, Hidden Valley and Keystone Canyon. All of the freeways received a 1 rating, except for 1-80 West, which rated a 2.

The other dirtiest areas were North Valleys (1.8), Northeast Reno (1.9), Horizon Hills (2), and Sun Valley (2.3, the worst score received).

Results from the index help KTMB determine where to focus future cleanup efforts.
