Animal shelter officer Jeff Brooks reaches for a baby pigeon huddling next to a step after it apparently fell out of a nest in the eaves of a downtown motel. Brooks secreted the pigeon in nearby shrubs in the expectation that the mother would find it. “Nevada Wildlife tells us to return them someplace close by rather than taking them to the shelter,” Brooks said. The mother—or at least a concerned adult pigeon—watched Brooks from the roof a few feet over his head. She was perched next to a rubber owl that is supposed to scare birds away.
