The Washoe County Concert Association closes its 2005-2006 season with a performance by Quartet San Francisco. The string quartet performs a wide range of styles including classical, jazz, big band and Latin. Violinist and quartet founder Jeremy Cohen studied under Anne Crowden and Itzhak Perlman and has performed as a soloist with orchestras such as the Virginia Symphony, the California Symphony and the Reno Philharmonic. His fellow band membersโ€”violinist Kayo Miki, violist Emily Onderdonk and cellist Joel Cohenโ€”have also worked with various orchestras in the United States and Europe. The groupโ€™s 2002 self-titled debut gave listeners a taste of their eclectic repertoire: tango selections, Dave Brubeck tunes and even a cover of Stevie Wonderโ€™s โ€œSir Duke.โ€ Their latest CD, Lรกtigo, has a decidedly Latin flavor. The quartet prides itself on its fresh approach to chamber music. โ€œOur performance on first listen may be formal concert material but is stylistically intense, really swings and has a hard groove,โ€ Jeremy Cohen says. โ€œItโ€™s rhythmic, Latin and funkyโ€”itโ€™s where we see classical music clearly headed.โ€ Quartet San Francisco and tango dancers Sandor and Parissa will perform 7 p.m. May 5 at the Pioneer Center for the Performing Arts, 100 S. Virginia St. Tickets are $20. Call 786-7300 or 686-6600.
