Canadian supergroup The New Pornographers are touring this month to support their new album. This time around, their sound is a little slower and more sedate than the frenetic, jangly power-pop theyโ€™re known forโ€”perhaps the influence of frontman Carl Newmanโ€™s solo work. Fans of alt-country chanteuse Neko Case will enjoy the slow, dreamy โ€œThese Are The Fables,โ€ though her powerful pipes donโ€™t get as much exercise on this album. However, the Pornographersโ€™ lyrics are as colorful and inscrutable as ever, and their melodies and hooks just as catchy and difficult to resist. โ€œIโ€™ve been listening too long/to one song,โ€ sings Newman in โ€œSing Me Spanish Techno,โ€ a feeling his fans understand all too well.
