Don’t hate them because they’re corporate. In fact, the truth is that they only look corporate (nifty suits, check; diagonal bangs, check; big-budget, major-label debut, check). In actuality, the Click Five are academic—they honed their chops at Boston’s Berklee School of Music, where they apparently double-majored in Applied Hooksmanship and Classic Chord Progressions, with a practicum in the Art of the ’80s Cover. The result is an album that you can sneer at all you like if you’re one of those tiresome indie-rock people but that you’ll enjoy whether you’re willing to admit it or not. There’s simply no arguing with the effortless power-pop grace of “Time Machine” and “Angel to You (Devil to Me).” Resistance is futile.
