On her last album, vocalist Tierney Sutton chose a program of jazz standards that are normally performed as instrumentals. On this one, she takes a similar approach in a more focused vein, performing a set of compositions either written by or closely associated with legendary pianist Bill Evans. All the expected favorites are hereโ€””Waltz for Debby,” “Turn Out the Stars,” “Detour Ahead,” etc.โ€”and Suttonโ€™s smooth, relaxed delivery is a perfect match for the material. Accompanied only by a piano trio (Evansโ€™ own favorite configuration), she soars and whispers with effortless grace, celebrating the legacy of one of jazz pianoโ€™s greatest figures while simultaneously staking her own claim to this familiar repertoire.
