George Mitchell’s list of achievements is long. During his 14 years as a senator, he was elected Senate Majority Leader, voted “most respected member” for six consecutive years and championed many important bills. His work in the mid-1990s on economic initiatives in Ireland earned him the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian honor the U.S. government can give, plus a Nobel Peace Prize nomination. He also worked for peace in the Middle East. Now the independent overseer of the American Red Cross’ Liberty Fund—created to aid the victims of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks—Mitchell will speak about his work in Northern Ireland and the Middle East at a benefit for the College of Arts & Science at the University of Nevada, Reno.
