George Mitchellโ€™s list of achievements is long. During his 14 years as a senator, he was elected Senate Majority Leader, voted “most respected member” for six consecutive years and championed many important bills. His work in the mid-1990s on economic initiatives in Ireland earned him the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian honor the U.S. government can give, plus a Nobel Peace Prize nomination. He also worked for peace in the Middle East. Now the independent overseer of the American Red Crossโ€™ Liberty Fundโ€”created to aid the victims of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacksโ€”Mitchell will speak about his work in Northern Ireland and the Middle East at a benefit for the College of Arts & Science at the University of Nevada, Reno. The event will begin at 7:30 p.m. March 28 at Nightingale Concert Hall, inside the Church Fine Arts Complex at UNR. Tickets are $50. Call 784-6847.
