Director and musician Rob Zombie sets out to make a tribute to ‘70s horror films but winds up making an incoherent mess. While he does show a clever edge in occasional scenes, the film feels like a cheat after Zombie’s bragged so much about how this film got passed from studio to studio because it was too violent. The film actually has a low gore quotient, so I imagine the film’s getting passed along was because it was stinking up the studio vaults like a dead possum. This tale of tourists getting stuck in an unsavory place thinks it’s a tribute to The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, but it actually has a lot more in common with Dan Aykroyd’s Nothing But Trouble. Actually, after seeing this film, I have newfound respect for the Aykroyd movie.
