Director Andrew Davis provides a decent adaptation of the popular novel about juvenile delinquents being sentenced to dig holes at a strange detention camp. Jon Voight steals the show as a sunflower-seed-chomping abuser of authority, and Tim Blake Nelson is hilarious as a nosy psychiatrist. The kids are good, and the filmโs jogging back and forth in time (Patricia Arquette stars as an Old West schoolteacher turned bandit) is effective. Lots of cool lizards and Henry Winkler to boot.
