Director Andrew Davis provides a decent adaptation of the popular novel about juvenile delinquents being sentenced to dig holes at a strange detention camp. Jon Voight steals the show as a sunflower-seed-chomping abuser of authority, and Tim Blake Nelson is hilarious as a nosy psychiatrist. The kids are good, and the filmโ€™s jogging back and forth in time (Patricia Arquette stars as an Old West schoolteacher turned bandit) is effective. Lots of cool lizards and Henry Winkler to boot.
