Welcome to this weekโs Reno News & Review.
I guess the big news behind the scenes here at the paper is News Editor Deidre Pike is leaving. Again. Sort of.
I say โsort ofโ because she will continue writing her column. I say โagainโ because sheโs probably left this paper almost as many times as Iโve had title changes.
She first came to and left this paper in 1994. She wrote theater reviews, but she wandered off after awhile. She returned in 1997 and was news editor under Erik Espe for about eight months before she went over to the Reno Gazette-Journal for a couple years. She came back in 2000 as news editor under Jimmy Boegle, and when he left, she became editor.
The last time she left was in December 2002. I became editor, and she became kind of a editor-at-large before returning to be news editor last April.
Deidreโs always been a seekerโa spiritual and intellectual nomad. For many nomads, life is a big, old circle, and while every trip is new, they always return to the place they began, changed. Maybe. Sometimes.
These days, Deidreโs lecturing up at UNR. Sheโs carrying a full load, and there was just no way she was going to work two full-time jobs for another semester.
I wouldnโt be surprised to see Deidre back on staff here someday. Iโm not going to predict it; I just want to get it in print, so I can say, โI told you so,โ when it happens.
At any rate, youโll see a few changes in the paper. In the short term, while I decide whoโs going to be news editor, there may be one or two less local stories in the news section. In the long termโhard to say. All the applicants have their strengths, proclivities and weaknesses.
If you want to send me some ideas of what you want to see in our news section, Iโll certainly take them into consideration as I talk to candidates.
RTV No. 13: Deidre Pike votes, and you either want to vote with her or aginโ her.
