Last week, addresses in Washoe County received a mailer from “The Franklin Project,” endorsing a slate of local and statewide candidates. That political action committee is controlled by California transplant Robert Beadles, the subject of our October print cover story. Mr. Beadles has vowed to spend millions to elect “little Trump 2.0s” to Nevada political offices. And he’s just getting started. My October editor’s note cautions voters about some of those candidates and their lies about election integrity. In a related guest column, Abbi Whitaker of Reno’s Abbi Agency reminds readers that democracy itself is on the ballot next month.
Kris Vagner’s Art of the State centers on what’s happening in the local arts community. Our culture roundup, meanwhile, features a look at a new documentary about killer drones that premieres in Reno on Oct. 18, as well as news about some literary events this month.
Movie reviewer Bob Grimm notes there are a lot of flicks about Marilyn Monroe, but there’s still room for one about Norma Jean’s personal demons and painful struggles. But he reports that Blonde, now streaming on Netflix, turns her life story into an incoherent, bad horror movie.

With Halloween on the way, the topic of Dave Robert’s latest Streetalk is whether folks believe in the supernatural. The truth is out there.
Keep watching the skies: Star gazer Robert Victor has the lowdown on celestial happenings this month—when all of the other planets except Venus will appear to be going backward. That may also be happening to Earth—if current politics here and abroad is any indication.
