From the editor’s desk
The recent collapse of a Reno-based real estate-investment fund has left hundreds of Nevadans, many from the Truckee Meadows, worried about millions of dollars they risked in a scheme that was touted as generating 7-14% returns and as “safe as a savings account.” Hughes Private Capital’s financial statements were “disconnected from reality,” creditors learned.
Recycled Records, a Reno institution for nearly a half-century, is now settled into its new digs at at 4048 Kietzke Lane after 11 years as a fixture in Midtown, Matt Bieker reports.
Nevada teachers are pushing for a “Time for 20” plan, which would cap class sizes, raise teacher pay by 20% and bump starting pay for staff members to $20 an hour, writes Loryn Elizares. The 2023 Legislature did debate educators’ salaries, but the final weeks of the session have had more to do with handouts for billionaires—a long-honored Nevada tradition, as I explain in my Editor’s Note.
Our annual Summer Events Guide points readers to festivals, fairs, pow-wows, cook-offs and other events on tap throughout Northern Nevada during the next three months. Jessica Santina, meanwhile, previews Northern Nevada’s summer performing-arts season, which she writes is filled with lighthearted fare, including comedies, feel-good dramas, upbeat dance numbers, killer tunes … or a combination of all of these. Of course, our Summer Guide would not be complete without Bob Grimm’s look at the season’s cinematic offerings, from The Flash to The Equalizer 3.
Speaking of Bob Grimm, he says he loved Halle Bailey’s performance in the live-action The Little Mermaid, but that “the movie surrounding her is murky, overly long and hampered by paint-by-numbers performances.” Our reviewer has a much higher opinion of Platonic, starring Rose Byrne and Seth Rogen, which he describes as the “latest must-see comedy series” airing on Apple TV+.
Our latest Taste of the Town spotlights Reno Food and Drink Week, the return of Food Truck Friday, The Row’s BBQ, Brews and Blues fest, and other upcoming events on the culinary calendar.
And as the winter sky gives way to the summer constellations, Robert Victor, the RN&R’s resident star-gazer, points readers to the Milky Way and traces the paths of the bright, wandering planets visible in June.
Most of these stories, and a lot more, are blooming in our June edition, free—as always—at newsstands across Northern Nevada. Be sure to cast your votes in the nomination round of this year’s Best of Northern Nevada competition. The deadline for ballots is June 11, so head to vote.renonr.com before the digital polls close!
I’ll see you in the funny papers.
Take care,
