Lake Tahoe is changing faster than it has in decades. In our October print-edition cover story, reporter Zoe Dixon gets you up to speed on what scientists are finding—and what it all means.

Adele’s, the beloved Carson City restaurant, closed in 2019, but it still holds a place in locals’ hearts. “It is said that more deals happened in Adele’s than at the legislature,” wrote one customer. John Barrette brings us some fond memories—plus the latest on owner Charlie Abowd’s memoir/recipe book.

Calling all Gen Xers—and everyone else who loved the local pop-punk scene: Remember Zoinks!, the ’90s band that opened for NOFX and Rancid? The members are coming back together for a series of 30th anniversary shows in Carson City, Reno and Los Angeles this month. Learn more in Matt Bieker’s backstory/preview.

On Saturday, Oct. 14, we’ll be able to see an annular solar eclipse from Reno. Astronomy writer Robert Victor has the goods on exactly when to look up—plus more celestial night sky news.

Given that we’ll see one more partial eclipse in 2024, then we’ll have to wait another 22 years, the Oct. 14 one is pretty big news. Frank Mullen dug up a wealth of advice on how to view it, including a special event at the University of Nevada, Reno, Fleischmann Planetarium and some choice out-of-town locales.

Movie guy Bob Grimm was never very impressed with the Saw franchise. While Saw X is the best of the films so far, it’s still frustratingly implausible, he says.

Brigdon Markward has had a Taylor Swift song stuck in his head for at least a week. Learn more about the vocalist/guitarist’s inner thoughts in Matt King’s Lucky 13 column. Markward’s band, Bug Bath—whose style leans alt punk and emo but does not ignore pop—is playing at the Holland Project on Oct. 20.

The Perenn Bakery team is opening a new specialty grocery. Smiling With Hope pizza has extended hours. And there’s more up-to-the-minute food news from Maude Ballinger in Taste of the Town

Take care,
