Reno Jazz Orchestra Summer Concerts Pay Tribute to Quincy Jones in Reno and Lake Tahoe
The Reno Jazz Orchestraโs 2025 summer concerts will present A Tribute to Quincy Jones. The first performance is on Monday, July 21; the show starts at 7:30 pm at Sand Harbor State Park and is part of the Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival Partner Series. On Tuesday, July 22, the Tribute starts at 6 p.m. at the UNR Quad on campus; this is a free show presented by Artown. Tickets are available at RenoJazzOrchestra.org.
โQuincy Jones and Nina Simone gave us gifts of everlasting memories and music that we will be honored to reignite on stage with our 17-piece orchestra and vocalist performing the best of his jazz, soul and pop vocals and award-winning compositions,โ said Dr. Greg Johnson, music director.
For seven decades, Quincy Jonesโ genius emerged as a master musician, composer, arranger and producer. His brilliance evolved performing with Lionel Hampton, traveling the world as Dizzy Gillespieโs music director, arranging for Count Basie and Frank Sinatra, and producing Lesley Goreโs 1960s hits, Michael Jacksonโs greatest tunes, and the historic recording โWe Are the World.โ
Over the course of his career, he received many accolades including 28 Grammy Awards, a Primetime Emmy Award, and a Tony Award, as well as nominations for seven Academy Awards and four Golden Globe Awards.

Art in motion

Nevada Museum of Art presents Through the Lens: New Perspectives in Dance and Art. Join local choreographers Caitlin Bell, Cari Cunningham, Maggie Stack and Rosie Trump as they screen dance films created in response to both new and reimagined spaces throughout the museum and its forthcoming expansion. After the screenings, the choreographers will participate in a panel discussion exploring the role of dance in museum spaces, the creative process behind making a dance film, and the intersection of dance and visual art. Jamming good with weird and ghillies

Whether you like a jaunty Irish reel or the stirring wail of bagpipes, youโll enjoy plenty of music, song and dance at Celtic Night, presented by the Nevada Society of Scottish Clans and the Sons and Daughters of Erin as part of Artown. Their annual joint celebration of Celtic culture and heritage features performances by Sierra Highland Pipe Band, Plastic Paddy, Sierra Silverstrings, Battle Born Highland Dancers, McKeever Irish Dancers, Scotty Cozen, Karrie OโNeill and Kat MacMartin. One ring to rule them all

Circus Bella brings its blend of circus enchantment and madcap mayhem to town as part of Artown. This diverse troupe of acrobats, aerialists, jugglers and clowns, from the Bay Area and beyond, performs feats of artistry, skill and derring-do to the lively tunes of the late composer Rob Reich and the six-piece Circus Bella All-Star Band in their hour-long show Hoopla! Shows start at 3 and 5 p.m., Saturday, July 12, and at 11 a.m, Sunday, July 13, at the Reno Public Market, 299 E. Plumb Lane. Admission is free. Visit artown.org.
Hot town

Victorian Avenue in downtown Sparks will be the site of several pop-up events as part of the โSummer in the Cityโ program. Upcoming events include Reno Renegade Baggersโ cornhole tournament, Cornhole on Vic, from 4 to 8 p.m., Saturday, July 12; the Street Art Celebration from 2 to 6 p.m., Saturday, July 19; and the Midsummer Craft Fair from noon to 6 p.m., Saturday, July 26. The city will close Victorian Avenue from Pyramid Way to the east side of Victorian Plaza to traffic during the 2025 events season. During this closure period, all downtown businesses will remain open, and outdoor spaces will be enhanced to create a welcoming and fun environment for attendees. Sex beat

Los Angeles-based, dark electronic duo Die Sexual will have you falling to the floor and begging for more when they bring their siren songs of dance-floor decadence to town this weekend. Conjuring their influences of EBM, techno and electropop, Rosselinni and Anton Floriano create an intoxicating mix of analog synthetics, seductive vocals and pulsating rhythms as heard on bangers such as โDarkest Hour,โ โDressed in Blackโ and โNeed to Sinโ off their album Elektro Body Musique. The Funktion Chicano Market presents a celebration of Chicano men and women in music and film, focusing on two films depicting the lives of two young singers whose lives were cut short as their stars were rising. Watch a double feature of the 1987 film La Bamba starring Lou Diamond Phillips as teenaged rock โnโ roll singer Ritchie Valens, and the 1997 film Selena, starring Jennifer Lopez as Tejano pop singer Selena Quintanilla. There will also be displays of lowriders, hot rods and classic cars as well as food trucks, a vendor area and music. Itโs not quite like running through a field of lavender in Provence, France, but youโll find plenty of the herbal stuff to sniff and taste at the eighth annual Sierra Nevada Lavender and Honey Festival. There will be demonstrations and educational exhibits by lavender growers and beekeepers, food made with lavender and honey, arts and crafts booths, a chalk walk, a bike valet, Lavender Bonnet & Honey Hat Contest and entertainment, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Sunday, July 13, at Idlewild Park, 1900 Idlewild Drive. Jazzed up

The first week of the 14th annual Classical Tahoe music festival gets under way with the Brubeck Jazz Summit Series, which celebrates the music and legacy of jazz pianist/composer Dave Brubeck and his wife/promoter/collaborator Iola Brubeck. The BJS 25: Inspirations concert on Thursday, July 17, features the Contemporary Masters Sextet, an all-star lineup of todayโs leading jazz artists, including saxophonists Roxy Coss and Lucas Pino, pianist Miki Yamanaka and bassist Gerald Cannon. Each member of the sextet will step into the spotlight as a bandleader, performing their own original works and celebrating Brubeckโs music through beloved classics and fresh arrangements. The BJS Showcase Finale on Friday, July 18, puts the spotlight on todayโs rising jazz musicians in a side-by-side finale concert with the faculty-in-residence members of the Contemporary Masters Sextet and musical guests Chris and Dan Brubeck. Both shows start at 7 p.m. and take place at the Classical Tahoe Ricardi Pavilion on the campus of the University of Nevada, Reno, at Lake Tahoe, 291 Country Club Drive, Incline Village. Tickets are $55-$200. The festival continues with the Classical Tahoe Festival Orchestra series on July 25-Aug. 9, and the Chamber Music at Classical Tahoe series on July 27-Aug. 10.
