Vegasโthe place everyone loves to go or professes to hate (or both). Itโs both an experiment in the mutability of authenticityโbouncing between real fakes and fake fakesโand the โsafeโ destination of choice for those who donโt want to be inconvenienced with travel to โrealโ places. Itโs a culture of carefully controlled spectacle, where mega-buck entertainment and the illusory pull of โwinningโ will always trump art. Vegas architecture, Steve Wynnโs art collection, the Guggenheimโs attempt to fake the museum, Siegfried & Roy, Mandalay Bayโs shark reef, fountains and lap dancers are contrasted with their environmental and non-profit alternatives. Although advertisingโs pitch is that what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas, Fox correctly suggests that many a metaphorโfrom gaming to themingโhas spread outward from Vegas.
