Ziggy Marley and Spearhead join forces for a night of socially conscious music. Marley is touring without his band, the Melody Makers, in support of his solo album, Dragonfly. As one would expect from the son of the legendary Bob Marley, Ziggy’s songs call for social justice and peace among different peoples. “In the Name of God” decries religious warfare and “Shalom Saalam” centers on the Israeli and Palestinian conflict. The album also includes more personal tracks like the hopeful “Rainbow” and “Never Deny You,” a declaration of Marley’s commitment to his Rastafarian faith. Spearhead singer Michael Franti (pictured) also sings about social and political issues. With his earlier bands—the Beatnigs and Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy—Franti took aim at racism, militarism and misogyny. In 1994, he formed Spearhead, blending elements of rock, reggae, funk and soul with his political rap lyrics. The band has released four albums including its latest Everyone Deserves Music. One song off the album, the anti-war “Bomb the World,” has become a popular slogan on T-shirts and at peace demonstrations around the world.
