Welcome to this weekโs Reno News & Review. As I sit writing this, the first official day of spring is just a day awayโand I couldnโt be more excited. I feel like this winter, especially the last half of it, has been brutal. We needed the snow, for sure, but the roads have been crappy and the skies have been gloomy for whatโs seemed like weeks at a time.
I donโt know about you, but I think everyone in the newsroom is itching to get out of town, or at least get out in the sunshine for a while. So, for this weekโs feature story, we decided to run a photo essay about Bodie, California, using photos I took there last year. If youโve not heard of it, itโs a ghost townโone of the nationโs best preservedโjust about 135 miles from Reno. Itโs totally worth a visit, but, then again, Iโd say that about just any ghost town. Visiting one is my idea of an ideal day trip.
If itโs not yours, check out our Streetalk column. This week, Special Projects Editor Matt Bieker asked folks to tell him their favorite day trip spots. A few of the places they recommended were ones with which I wasnโt familiar.
For now, Iโm happy to hoof it around town when the weatherโs good. Iโll get out to a ghost town or two once the snows have melted and the roads arenโt mostly mud. Itโs early in the year yet. In fact, a lot of placesโBodie includedโarenโt accessible right now. Theyโre still snowed in. Iโm just glad thatโs not the case here in the valley.
