Vanessa Williamsโ€™ recent release, Everlasting Love, is a trip down memory lane in a brand-new car, and it features some songs that hold up better than others. Williamsโ€™ smooth voice is more than adequate for familiar ground such as โ€œOne Less Bell to Answerโ€ and the great Al Greenโ€™s โ€œShow and Tell,โ€ but her cover of โ€œNever Can Say Goodbye,โ€ which features an intense George Benson guitar solo, is one of the better examples of rejuvenating a classic. Williamsโ€™ voice carries a depth of emotion that a pre-adolescent Michael Jackson just couldnโ€™t manage, and this updated arrangement is far more danceable. And although I could live without another rendition of โ€œWith You Iโ€™m Born Againโ€ (a duet with Benson), her new version of the Stylisticsโ€™ classic โ€œYou Are Everythingโ€ is both sweet and sultry.
